You may have heard people talk about balancing your chakras, but what exactly are chakras?
In yogic and spiritual traditions, chakras are described as energy centres within the body, each associated with different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual experience.
There are traditionally seven main chakras, running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
Here’s a simple guide to what each one represents.
🔴 1. Root Chakra — Muladhara
Location: Base of the spine
Associated with: Grounding, stability, security
The Root Chakra is traditionally connected with our sense of safety, stability, and connection to the physical world.
Affirmation: I am safe. I am grounded.
🟠 2. Sacral Chakra — Svadhisthana
Location: Lower abdomen
Associated with: Creativity, emotions, pleasure
This chakra is associated with emotional expression, creativity, relationships, and our ability to experience joy.
Affirmation: I allow myself to feel, create, and enjoy.
🟡 3. Solar Plexus Chakra — Manipura
Location: Upper abdomen
Associated with: Confidence, willpower, personal power
Traditionally linked with self-esteem, determination, and taking action.
Affirmation: I trust myself and my abilities.
🟢 4. Heart Chakra — Anahata
Location: Centre of the chest
Associated with: Love, compassion, connection
The Heart Chakra represents love and compassion — both towards ourselves and others.
Affirmation: I give and receive love openly.
🔵 5. Throat Chakra — Vishuddha
Location: Throat
Associated with: Communication, truth, expression
This chakra is traditionally connected with speaking honestly, expressing yourself, and listening with awareness.
Affirmation: My voice matters. I express myself with clarity.
🟣 6. Third Eye Chakra — Ajna
Location: Between the eyebrows
Associated with: Intuition, awareness, insight
The Third Eye Chakra is associated with inner awareness, intuition, and seeing beyond the obvious.
Affirmation: I trust my inner wisdom.
⚪ 7. Crown Chakra — Sahasrara
Location: Top of the head
Associated with: Consciousness, spirituality, connection
The Crown Chakra represents spiritual awareness and a sense of connection to something beyond the individual self.
Affirmation: I am open to wisdom and awareness.
Why Do People Work With Chakras?
Chakra practices can be incorporated into meditation, yoga, breathwork, journaling, affirmations, and other spiritual practices.
Some people also choose crystals traditionally associated with particular chakras as part of their personal rituals.
For example, Rose Quartz is often associated with the Heart Chakra, while Amethyst is commonly connected with the Third Eye and Crown Chakras.
These associations come from spiritual traditions and are not scientifically established medical treatments.
From Root to Crown
The seven chakras offer a symbolic journey:
Grounding → Creativity → Confidence → Love → Expression → Intuition → Spiritual Awareness
You don't need to understand everything at once.
Start with one intention, spend a few quiet minutes with it, and see what resonates with you.
Sometimes, the journey inward begins with simply becoming more aware of yourself.
